A birthday calendar is perpetual: it has no weekdays and no year, just twelve month blocks with numbered writing lines. Write each birthday and anniversary once, and the same sheet keeps working for the rest of your life.

Why perpetual beats dated

Dated calendars force you to copy every birthday across each January, which is exactly when the copying gets skipped and a birthday gets missed. A perpetual sheet removes that annual chore entirely, because a birthday on the fourteenth is on the fourteenth every year.

Keep it inside a kitchen cupboard door, in the front of a planner, or pinned above the desk where you write cards. Reviewing it at the start of each month takes about ten seconds.

What to record

Birthdays are the obvious use, but the same twelve blocks handle wedding anniversaries, work anniversaries, memorial dates, pet birthdays, renewal dates for insurance and subscriptions, and annual medical checks.

Writing the date number in the small left-hand space and the name on the ruled line keeps the list sortable by eye, so the earliest date in each month is easy to spot.

Sizing and paper

Letter portrait gives three columns of four months with roughly six lines each, which suits most households. Landscape gives four columns of three, with slightly fewer but wider lines. Tabloid roughly doubles the number of entries per month, which is what large families and small offices need.

Printing on card stock is worth it here, because a birthday calendar is a document you will handle every month for years.

How to print your calendar

  1. Choose your paper size before downloading. The sheet is drawn at the exact dimensions of Letter, Legal, A4 or Tabloid, following the international paper size standards.
  2. Download the PDF file format file, or open it in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  3. In the print dialog set scaling to 100% or “Actual size”, never “Fit to page”, so the grid keeps its measured proportions.
  4. Match the printer’s paper tray to the size you picked. For Tabloid (11 × 17 in), use a printer or copy shop that feeds 11 × 17 stock.

Frequently asked questions

Does the birthday calendar show weekdays?
No. Weekdays change every year, so a perpetual sheet deliberately omits them and gives you writing lines instead.
How many birthdays fit per month?
Between five and eight per month on Letter, depending on orientation, and roughly double that on Tabloid.
