Twenty-four or twenty-five boxes
Traditional European advent calendars run from the first of December to Christmas Eve, giving twenty-four doors. Many British and American versions add a twenty-fifth for Christmas Day itself. Both are correct, and the box count control lets you print whichever your household grew up with.
You can also set any other number, which turns the same sheet into a countdown to a birthday, a holiday, a deployment homecoming or the last day of school.

What to write in the boxes
An activity advent calendar tends to outlast a chocolate one. Fill boxes with things like bake gingerbread, read a Christmas story, call a grandparent, donate a toy, or drive out to look at the lights. Because the boxes are printed empty, the plan fits your family rather than a manufacturer's.
Classrooms often use the same sheet as a kindness countdown, with each child writing one good deed into a box and colouring it in once it is done.
Making it into a wall display
Print on card stock and the numbered boxes are sturdy enough to cut out and pin to a ribbon, string or garland. Printed whole on Tabloid, the sheet works as a single large poster with boxes big enough for a young child to colour in.
For a reusable version, laminate the sheet and cross off each day with a dry-erase marker.
How to print your calendar
- Choose your paper size before downloading. The sheet is drawn at the exact dimensions of Letter, Legal, A4 or Tabloid, following the international paper size standards.
- Download the PDF file format file, or open it in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- In the print dialog set scaling to 100% or “Actual size”, never “Fit to page”, so the grid keeps its measured proportions.
- Match the printer’s paper tray to the size you picked. For Tabloid (11 × 17 in), use a printer or copy shop that feeds 11 × 17 stock.
