Paper weight in plain terms

US bond weights and cover weights are measured differently, which is why 32 lb bond is thinner than 65 lb cover. Grams per square metre is the more honest number and is printed on most reams sold outside North America.

Matte, not glossy

Glossy and photo papers are designed for images, not handwriting. Ink sits on the coating rather than soaking in, so ballpoint smears, pencil barely marks and dry-erase markers slide. For any calendar you write on, matte or uncoated is the correct choice.

A light matte coating is worth it if the calendar carries a colour theme and will hang for a year, because uncoated paper dulls saturated colour slightly. For a plain black and white grid, ordinary copy paper looks the same as anything more expensive.

Matching paper to pen

Ballpoint and pencil work on anything. Gel pens and fineliners can feather on cheap 20 lb paper, showing a fuzzy edge to each stroke; 28 lb or heavier fixes it. Permanent markers bleed through 20 lb paper onto whatever is behind it, so use 32 lb or card if the calendar is taped to a wall you care about.

Highlighters are the harshest test. On light paper they buckle the sheet and show through; on 105 gsm and above they behave.

Ink cost and theme choice

Heavier paper does not use more ink, but the design does. A solid black header band across a Tabloid sheet is a meaningful amount of toner on a laser printer and a lot of ink on an inkjet. The ink saver theme removes filled bands and lightens the rules, which visibly reduces cartridge use on a calendar you print twelve times a year.

Laser printers cost roughly the same per page whatever is on it, so if you have one, choose the theme you prefer visually rather than economically.

Laminating and reuse

Card stock plus a pouch laminator turns a monthly grid into a reusable dry-erase sheet. Use 65 lb cover or heavier as the base, because thin paper curls inside a laminating pouch and traps bubbles.

Laminate after trimming to size, then trim again leaving about two millimetres of sealed edge. A fully trimmed-to-the-edge laminate peels apart within weeks.
