What each year covers

The calendar year is the Gregorian year: 1 January to 31 December. It governs tax years in many countries, most business reporting and almost every wall calendar sold in shops.

The academic year follows the teaching cycle. In the northern hemisphere it typically starts in late August or early September and ends in June or July, split into two semesters or three terms. In Australia and New Zealand it aligns with the calendar year instead, running February to December.

Neither is more correct. They are answers to different questions: when does the year end, and when does the work reset.

Who should use an academic year planner

Teachers, students, homeschooling families and anyone whose life is shaped by a school run. A January planner splits their year in half at exactly the point when nothing changes, and leaves them buying a second planner in August.

University staff, tutors, sports coaches working with school teams and school administrators fall into the same group.

Who should use a calendar year planner

Anyone whose commitments reset in January: business planning, tax records, fitness goals, subscriptions and household budgets. Financial reporting in particular is much easier when the planner boundaries match the reporting boundaries.

If you work with fiscal quarters that start in January, the quarterly view of a calendar year planner lines up with the reports you will be writing.

The academic calendar generator produces a twelve-month view starting in August, with the year labelled as a span such as 2026–2027. The yearly calendar generator produces the January to December version.

Because both are generated on demand, you can also start the year in any month you like by generating individual months in sequence — useful for fiscal years that begin in April or October.

Running both without duplicating work

Many households need both: an academic year sheet for the school side and a calendar year sheet for finances. Keep them in different places rather than side by side, because their overlap invites double entry.

The simplest rule is that anything with a school term attached goes on the academic sheet and anything with money attached goes on the calendar sheet.
